Jammu, Feb 03: A series of coordinated defence and civic initiatives across the Jammu region underscored a strong commitment to education, community outreach, heritage awareness and veteran welfare, reflecting a holistic approach to nation-building.
In Akhnoor, Crossed Swords Gunners under the White Knight Corps launched a two-month Elementary Education Programme for children from the nomadic Bakarwal community at Naryai. Designed to address the educational challenges faced by migratory families, the initiative focuses on imparting basic literacy and numeracy skills, along with lessons on hygiene, cleanliness and good habits to enhance overall well-being.
The programme highlights the Indian Army’s sustained civic action efforts to empower marginalised communities through education and social awareness.
At Nagrota, youth creativity and heritage consciousness took centre stage with a regional “Tree of Life” Poster Making Competition, jointly organised by INTACH Jammu Chapter and Sainik School Nagrota.
The event saw participation from over 70 students drawn from Sainik School Nagrota, Army Public Schools at Nagrota, Miran Sahib and Akhnoor, Government HSS Nagrota and St Joseph’s Nagrota. Through vibrant artwork, participants depicted themes of ecology, heritage and the interconnectedness of life.
Eminent INTACH members, conservationists and retired officials interacted with students, encouraging heritage preservation. Addressing the gathering, Capt (IN) Shibu Devasia, Principal, Sainik School Nagrota, lauded the initiative for nurturing environmental awareness and respect for Jammu’s cultural and natural legacy among youth.
Meanwhile, in Naushera, Tithwal Warriors under White Knight Corps conducted a comprehensive Ex-Servicemen Outreach Programme on January 31, aimed at strengthening bonds with veterans and their families. The programme included briefings on ESM welfare schemes, pensions, ECHS benefits, financial literacy and awareness against digital scams, with inputs on Defence Salary Packages and investment options provided by SBI.
A medical camp offered consultations and medicines to veterans, dependents and local residents, while a Multi-Utility Shed was inaugurated at Nonial for community use. The event concluded with an interactive session with the Commanding Officer, ensuring veterans’ concerns were heard and addressed.
Collectively, these initiatives reaffirm the Indian Army’s people-centric ethos and collaborative engagement with educational and heritage institutions, reinforcing its role in inclusive development, youth empowerment, cultural preservation and veteran welfare across the region. (PIB)
