Indian Army to Host ‘Surya Dronathon’ in Spiti to Boost Indigenous Drone Innovation

New Delhi, July 29: In a major step toward enhancing indigenous defence capabilities and fostering military-grade innovation, the Indian Army’s Surya Command is set to host the first-ever Surya Dronathon 2025 in the challenging high-altitude terrain of Sumdo in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh.

An official spokesperson said the Dronathon is being Organized in collaboration with the Drone Federation of India and the competition will take place at an altitude of 10,700 feet, making it one of the highest drone obstacle courses in the country.

Participants — ranging from freelance innovators and drone startups to established OEMs and military personnel — will face rigorous trials designed to replicate operational scenarios under extreme weather and terrain conditions.

Officials said the initiative is part of the Indian Army’s broader thrust towards technological modernization and aligns with the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The competition is also aimed at identifying next-generation drone solutions tailored to meet the Army’s evolving operational requirements, particularly in high-altitude conflict zones.

“Surya Dronathon will act as a launchpad for indigenous designs and innovation, directly contributing to national security and expanding India’s self-reliance in the defence sector,” an Army spokesperson said.

The event will be conducted in two phases: from August 10 to 15 and August 20 to 24, with entries open in three categories — Service personnel, Freelance/Open category pilots, and OEMs. The last date for registration is August 5.

Participants will compete in multiple stages, including drone races, obstacle navigation, and tactical field trials that simulate battlefield conditions. Winners will not only receive prizes but may also be offered procurement opportunities, enabling the direct induction of their innovations into Indian Army operations.

Detailed competition guidelines, eligibility, and registration procedures have been made available on the official social media handles of Surya Command and Uttar Bharat Area.

With the rising role of unmanned systems in modern warfare, the Indian Army’s Surya Dronathon 2025 is expected to be a game-changer in bridging the gap between civilian innovation and military deployment
