Shopian, April 6: A severe hailstorm lashed several parts of Shopian and Kulgam districts on Monday, damaging orchards and triggering concern among farmers over potential crop losses.

The affected areas in Shopian include Saidpora Bala, Sedow, and Chack, while reports of intense hail fall also emerged from Feri Pora, Kanjullar-Mutagen, and nearby villages. In Kulgam district, parts of Manzgam witnessed heavy hailstorm activity.

Residents described the hailstorm as sudden and intense. “The hail came down heavily within minutes and covered the orchards completely,” said a local resident, adding that “such weather at this stage always makes us anxious about the season ahead.”

Another resident said, “We have just begun to see the crop develop, and incidents like this create uncertainty. We can only hope the damage is minimal.”

Farmers said the hailstorm has raised fears of losses, especially in view of similar incidents in the past. “Last year, we suffered significant damage due to hailstorms. Naturally, people are worried this time as well,” a local farmer said.

During last year’s hailstorm, several areas including Nagbal, Imamsahib, Alsihpora, Wodipora, and Chitragam Kalan recorded extensive damage, with losses estimated between ₹100 crore and ₹150 crore.

Officials from the Horticulture Department, however, said that the crop is currently at the “Group-A stage,” and major damage is less likely at this point. “At this stage, the impact of hailstorms is generally limited, but a proper assessment will be conducted,” an official said.

Authorities have advised farmers to remain patient and wait for an official evaluation of the damage. “We urge growers not to panic. Teams will assess the situation and further updates will be shared accordingly,” the official added.
