Bandipora: Residents of Bandipora are calling for immediate action to address the deteriorating condition of Gulshan Chowk, a historic site in the town.
]Despite its social, political and cultural importance, the area has seen repeated renovation over the years under different schemes and CSR. However the Chowk has turned into a concrete monster.
Locals told Kashmir Convener that Gulshan Chowk had a park with a well grown lawn grass and trees around that would act as a relief for the passengers and pedestrians during hot summers. “But then someone put an evil eye on it and every year it witnessed renovation by different agencies including Municipal Council, NHPC and other district agencies who destroyed its essence and turned it into a concrete monster,” said Showkat Ahmad, a local resident.
Another resident, Suhail Ahmad appealed to the district administration to spare this Gulshan Chowk and restore its past glory by removing concrete and turning it into a simple park with trees. “We hope this spring, DC Bandipora order removal of concrete fountains in Gulshan Chowk and plant some Chinar or Deodar trees to turn it as a green patch, ” he added
The fountains, which were constructed several times, have remained non-functional since their installation. Locals are frustrated, with many suggesting that the fountains should be dismantled to make way for parking spaces, as the area suffers from limited parking.
“For few days the fountain worked but then it would create a nuisance in the town. We want green patches in town and planting trees in Gulshan Park would be a treat to eyes”.
Locals said the department of Jal Shakti has long ago snapped water supply to fountains due to non-payment of water tax by MCB.
Along with the fountains, the nearby Gulshan park is also in a state of neglect. Damaged lights remain unrepaired, further detracting from the park’s appeal. The presence of the fountains and other structures has reduced both the available parking space and the sitting area in the park, causing inconvenience for the public.
Initially, the construction of these features was welcomed by residents, but the lack of maintenance has led to widespread disappointment. Locals have expressed their concerns, noting that the Municipal Committee has not taken visible steps to address the situation.
Residents are now urging authorities to take swift action to restore Gulshan Chowk, ensure the fountains are made operational, and improve the overall condition of the park to meet the needs of the community.
