Jammu, Feb 04: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Wednesday indicated that a proposal for setting up a separate women’s degree college in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district is “not viable at present,” citing a focus on consolidating existing educational infrastructure.

The government’s stance was conveyed in a written reply by Minister Incharge for Higher Education during the ongoing budget session of the Legislative Assembly.

The reply was in response to a query by MLA Nizam-ud-Din Bhat regarding the status of the H.K. Government Degree College in Bandipora and the need for a dedicated women’s college in the area.

“The Department is presently prioritising enhancement of overall enrolment, strengthening of academic offerings and improving utilisation of existing institutional resources,” the minister stated in the reply.

“As a result of which, establishment of a separate Degree College for Women in the district Bandipora may not be viable at this stage,” the reply added.

Detailed information on the infrastructure, student enrolment, faculty strength, and facilities at the existing H.K. Government Degree College was provided in an annexure to the reply.
