Srinagar, Sep 30: Leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma on Wednesday described the autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly as “very unfortunate,” accusing the government of failing to respond to public issues and alleging that the Chief Minister had “sabotaged” the statehood demand by linking it to pre-1953 and Article 370 restoration positions.
Addressing media here, Sunil Sharma said the BJP had, on the first day of the session on September 21, collected the grievances of the people at every district headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir and sought answers from the government.
There were daily wagers, contractuals, daily rated workers, NHM and NYC employees, ASHA and Anganwadi workers, GRSO technical assistants, CAMPA workers, Water Testing Lab employees, and in every district, the problems that we faced in our daily lives were all issues. The government did not respond to any of these issues. We asked for an answer from the government with placards, he said.
That is why I say that these seven days were unfortunate for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Sunil Sharma added.
Referring to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s description of the session as “fruitful,” the LoP asked, From which angle do you think this was fruitful? You came, you went, gave a few speeches and left. Is this fruitful?
Sunil Sharma alleged that the Chief Minister had done something the history of Jammu and Kashmir will never forget, claiming that the common people were waiting for a statehood resolution.
The BJP is committed to statehood, on its agenda, but Chief Minister Omar Abdullah added the position of pre-1953 with statehood, added the position of restoration and 370, and you sabotaged the statehood of the common people’s statehood, he said.
Therefore, BJP asks you a very strong question. Who gave you the right to sabotage the statehood that you bless, to become its enemy, and to try to prolong it by adding the position of pre-1953 with it? he said.
Sunil Sharma said that after the removal of Article 370, “any doubt, any misguidance” that a person had has also ended, and that the full Constitution of India has been implemented in Jammu and Kashmir.
By reminding the position of pre-1953 again, you have somehow prolonged the statehood of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, you have sabotaged it, he alleged.
Reminding the Chief Minister of the pre-1953 period, Sharma said his late grandfather, Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, had demanded a separate constitution and a separate flag, following which then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru kept him in jail for 22 years.
Today, we ask the question from this Congress… the resolution, the paper on which it is written that along with the position of pre-1953 and the position of pre-1973, statehood is needed — that paper, that resolution, what is your response to it, Congress? he said.
