New Delhi, March 14: The Government on Saturday revoked the detention of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect, exercising powers under the National Security Act, stating that the decision was taken to foster peace and facilitate constructive dialogue in Ladakh.

In an official statement, the Government said Wangchuk had been detained on September 26, 2025, under the provisions of the National Security Act pursuant to an order issued by the District Magistrate, Leh, following a law and order situation that arose in Leh on September 24, 2025. The detention was aimed at maintaining public order, the statement said.

The Government noted that Wangchuk had already undergone nearly half of the prescribed detention period under the Act.

Referring to the developments over the past several months, the statement said authorities had been engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people in the region. However, it said that bandhs and protests had affected the atmosphere in Ladakh and adversely impacted sections of society, including students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators, tourists and the overall economy.

The Government remains committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh so as to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders,” the statement said.

It added that after due consideration, the Government decided to revoke Wangchuk’s detention with immediate effect in furtherance of this objective.

The statement reiterated the Government’s commitment to providing necessary safeguards for Ladakh and expressed hope that issues concerning the region would be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue. It referred to the mechanism of a High-Powered Committee and other appropriate platforms as avenues for discussions.

Wangchuk was detained in the backdrop of tensions in Leh town, which authorities described as a serious law and order situation. No further details were provided in the statement regarding the circumstances that led to the unrest.

The Government said it would continue efforts to maintain peace and stability in Ladakh while engaging with stakeholders to address regional concerns through institutional mechanisms.
