New Delhi, August 25: The Government e Marketplace (GeM) has achieved a landmark feat by crossing ₹15 lakh crore in cumulative Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) since its inception in 2016, marking a major milestone in India’s journey towards a transparent, efficient, and inclusive public procurement ecosystem.

According to Press Information Bureau (PIB), the achievement highlights the growing trust of buyers and sellers in the platform, which was launched as a digital initiative to streamline government procurement and ensure greater transparency.

In just nine years, GeM has transformed into a robust national marketplace that connects government buyers with a diverse community of sellers, including Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), startups, women-led businesses, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe enterprises, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

“This milestone is a testimony to the trust our stakeholders have placed in GeM. The success belongs to the lakhs of sellers and buyers who have transformed the way public procurement is carried out in India,” said Mihir Kumar, CEO of GeM. He added that the platform will continue to focus on deepening inclusivity, simplifying processes, and fostering innovation to ensure opportunities reach every corner of the country. “Together, we are building a transparent, accountable and digitally empowered procurement ecosystem aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat,” he said.

Each transaction on GeM represents more than just procurement—it reflects efficiency, accountability, and empowerment. By cutting red tape, reducing entry barriers, and embedding transparency through both policy and technology, GeM has empowered sellers at the grassroots while enabling government departments to procure efficiently.

Officials said GeM has not only expanded access to procurement for lakhs of sellers across varied sectors but has also emerged as a key driver of equitable growth. A major thrust of the platform has been to boost the participation of MSEs, women entrepreneurs, and startups, thereby integrating social and economic empowerment with governance. The marketplace has also significantly contributed to the vision of Digital India by pushing adoption of technology in governance and procurement processes.

The platform has played a vital role in strengthening accountability at every stage of procurement, ensuring a level playing field for sellers while giving buyers access to quality products and services at competitive prices. From office stationery and vehicles to high-value machinery and technology services, GeM today offers a wide array of products and services tailored to the needs of central ministries, state departments, and local bodies.

GeM’s success has also been attributed to its efforts in reaching the last mile. By fostering entrepreneurship, encouraging innovation, and ensuring opportunities for marginalized groups, the platform has turned into an enabler of social change. Officials noted that women-led SHGs and entrepreneurs from remote areas have found new markets through GeM, while startups have gained visibility and scale by supplying innovative solutions to government departments.

As it celebrates the ₹15 lakh crore GMV milestone, GeM is already setting its sights higher. Its roadmap focuses on deepening inclusivity, simplifying user experience, and introducing more innovations to sustain efficiency and transparency in procurement. Policymakers and administrators see GeM not merely as a platform but as a crucial pillar of India’s economic transformation and a key contributor to the larger vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
