GDC (Women) Sopore Hosts Essay Writing Competition on Women’s Role in Nation-Building
March 12: Government Degree College for Women Sopore on Wednesday organised an essay writing competition on Women’s Role on Nation-Building under the supervision of Pricnipal Prof. Subeena Chiloo.
An official spokesperson of the college said the Debates and Cultural Activities Committee, in collaboration with the Women Development Cell, organized an Essay Writing Competition on the theme “Role of Women in Nation-Building.” The event was part of the International Women’s Day 2025 celebrations, aligning with this year’s theme: “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment.”
The competition commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Aadil Mohi-Ud-Din Sheikh, Convener of the Debates and Cultural Activities Committee, who outlined the rules and regulations of the contest and emphasized the transformative power of women in shaping societies.
He particularly stressed the importance of girl education, stating, “Educating girls has far-reaching benefits that extend beyond the individual to the family, community, and society at large. It is a powerful tool for achieving social and economic development, promoting health and well-being, and ensuring a more equitable and just world.”
Acting Principal Dr. Murtaza Gilani also shared his insights, appreciating the committee’s efforts in selecting such a crucial topic. He lauded the students’ enthusiastic participation, noting that platforms like these enable young minds to express their perspectives on social progress and gender equality.
A significant number of students actively participated in the competition, submitting essays in both English and Urdu, as there was no language restriction. The college provided all necessary materials, including ball pens, paper sheets, and folders, to ensure smooth participation.
Faculty members who played a vital role in organizing the event included Dr. Pervaiz Ahmad Dar (HOD Zoology), Dr. Parvaiz Ahmad Dar (HOD Physics), Dr. Muzamil Wali, Prof. Aasiya Shafi, and Prof. Zaffar Majeed Rather, who also delivered the concluding remarks.
As a token of appreciation, light refreshments, including packets of dates, were distributed among all participants in view of the holy month Ramadan. The students expressed gratitude to Madam Principal and the organizing committee for providing them with an opportunity to showcase their talent and contribute to meaningful discussions on women’s empowerment.
