GDC Sumbal organises awareness programme against drug abuse
Sumbal: As part of the ongoing Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign under Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan, Government Degree College (GDC) Sumbal on Thursday organised an awareness programme to sensitise students about the rising menace of drug abuse.
The event was held in the college auditorium and was chaired by Principal Prof (Dr) Shabeena Shawl.
In her welcome address, principal GDC Sumbal Prof.Shabeena Shawl underscored the crucial role of parents and educational institutions in the early detection and prevention of substance abuse. “Parents must stay vigilant and closely observe behavioural changes in their children. Strong family support and value-based upbringing are key to preventing drug abuse,” she said.
On the occasion, speakers called upon students to act as peer leaders and spread awareness about the harmful effects of drug addiction. They stressed the importance of community engagement, informed dialogue, and joint efforts to combat the growing challenge.
Resource persons from various departments highlighted the multidimensional impact of drug abuse, ranging from health issues and financial distress to social alienation. They asserted that addressing the issue requires sustained awareness campaigns and active community participation.
The programme witnessed participation of faculty members, officials and students, including convenor NAMBA of GDC sumbal Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Parray, Dr.Zahid Ahmad, Gh Mohi uddin from the Excise Department, Fayaz Ahmad from the Youth Services and Sports Department, and ASI Manzoor Ahmad .
