GDC Sopore (Women’s) Hosts National Conference on Climate Resilience and Biomedical Innovation
Prof. Maryam Sarwat among keynote speakers; RFID-based library and youth entrepreneurship initiatives unveiled

Sopore, Nov 12 : The inaugural session of a two-day National Conference on ‘Frontiers in Basic Sciences Advancing Climate Resilience, Drug Discovery, and Epigenetic Medicine’ commenced on Wednesday at Women’s college in north Kashmir’s Sopore.
As per Kashmir Convener Correspondent, the conference, held under the with an aim to unite researchers, scientists, and students to explore ground-breaking developments at the intersection of climate science and biomedical research.
Member of the Legislative Assembly for Sopore, Irshad Rasool Kar was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session.
The presidium included Prof. Maryam Sarwat from Amity University, Noida, Mr. Shabir Ahmad Raina, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Sopore, Iftikhar Talib, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sopore, Prof. Aijaz Hakak, Principal of Amar Singh College.
The program, moderated by Prof. Zubair Syed Masoodi, Head of the Department of Computer Applications, began with the National Anthem and a traditional ‘Izbandh’ ceremony.
In her welcome address, Principal Prof. Subeena Chilloo emphasized the importance of such academic gatherings and commended the efforts of the Organizing Secretary, Dr. Jaffar Bhat.
The Chief Guest, Irshad Rasool Kar, MLA, commended the college for its academic milestones and assured his support for the long-pending demand of constructing a new auditorium.
The dignitaries then delivered their remarks. Prof. Aijaz Hakak spoke on the challenges within the education system, stressing that climate resilience and the protection of water bodies are urgent necessities. Prof. Maryam Sarwat expressed her delight at the conference’s focus on collaboration and knowledge dissemination.
ADC Shabir Raina thanked the organizers for highlighting climate resilience as a central theme. SSP Mr. Iftikhar Talib praised the college for creating a platform where the scientific community can prioritize work for the public good.
A significant highlight was the inauguration of the college’s newly upgraded RFID-based library system. The Librarian demonstrated the facility, which is designed to provide easy and quick access to books, a move widely appreciated by the guests as a step towards modernizing educational resources.
The college newsletter was also officially released during the event. The publication was spearheaded by Dr. Khalid Bashir and his student team, Taskeenah Latief and Adfar Jan, along with the Editor, Prof. Falak Naz.
The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Syed Murtaza Geelani, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries and participants for making the conference a reality.
Meanwhile, In a separate event, an awareness program under ‘Mission Yuva Udhyam Jagriti 4.0’ was held in the college auditorium to deliberate on strategies for motivating youth towards entrepreneurship.
The program coordinator, Dr. Aadil Mohi Ud Din, emphasized the mission’s role in fostering a culture of self-employment and entrepreneurship among students.
He underlined the need to shift the mindset of the younger generation away from an over-reliance on government jobs and towards creating their own ventures.
A large number of students attended the session, where they were informed about the ‘Mission Yuva App’ and encouraged to utilize its Skill Learning Hub to explore various courses.
