Baramulla, Feb 23: Humaira Shafi, a student of Govt Degree College Baramulla, won a gold medal in a ‘Muay Thai’ championship hosted by District Muay Thai association at Indoor Sports Stadium Baramulla.

The two-day championship started on February 22 and ended on Friday, with around 100 players participating from different parts of the district.

Humaira said she got interested in martial arts by watching videos on YouTube and joined a local academy in Langate. She has also won a Black belt in Karate championship and has participated twice in Wushu championship at the state level.

She admires Tajamul Islam, a two-time world kickboxing champion from Bandipora, and practises four hours daily to improve her techniques.

Currently pursuing her Bachelor's at Govt Boys Degree College Baramulla, she has won two state championships and one gold medal at SAMDO national. Humaira believes youth, especially girls, should join sports for physical and mental fitness instead of spending hours on mobile screens.

She thanked her parents and college administration for their support and aims to represent the country at the international level in the Olympics in the future.
