GCW Parade, Rangyug Conclude Masks & Props Workshop with Exhibition and Sale

Jammu, Dec 5: The Skill Development Cell of the Department of Performing Arts (Theatre), Government College for Women (GCW), Parade Ground, Jammu, in collaboration with Rangyug, concluded its seven-day Masks & Props Workshop on Friday with an exhibition-cum-sale showcasing theatre masks and props handcrafted by participating students.

 

Officials said the workshop saw the enthusiastic participation of nearly 80 students drawn from various academic departments, including those enrolled in the first and third semesters of the Theatre Skill Course.

 

During the concluding exhibition, students presented a diverse collection of masks and stage props that reflected their creativity, attention to detail, and understanding of theatrical design and visual aesthetics.

 

The event also featured the sale of several artworks to visitors, faculty members and fellow students, encouraging participants to explore artistic entrepreneurship alongside technical skill development.

 

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ravender Kumar Tickoo, Nodal Principal of all colleges of the Jammu Division, congratulated the students on their achievements and expressed satisfaction over the quality of their work.

 

He said the workshop had boosted students’ confidence, strengthened their practical knowledge of theatre production, and promoted interdisciplinary learning.

 

Deepak Kumar, Founder and Director of Rangyug, lauded the enthusiasm exhibited by the participants and stressed the importance of experiential learning in theatre education.

 

He said the workshop reflected Rangyug’s mission to nurture creativity among young performers through professional mentorship, collaborative pedagogy and artistic exploration, preparing them for opportunities in contemporary theatre and related creative fields.

 

The technical sessions were conducted by Narinder Sharma, a veteran theatre practitioner with more than 35 years of experience. He trained students in mask-making and prop design, including techniques related to material handling, colour mixing and visual interpretation, enabling them to independently produce stage-ready creative elements.

 

The workshop concluded with interactive discussions, peer review sessions and student reflections, during which participants shared their learning experiences of working with diverse materials and understanding the functional importance of design in theatrical performance.

 

The event was attended by Prof. Alpana Vohra, Prof. Randheer Kour and other faculty members of GCW Parade, along with Ashish Sharma from Rangyug. The initiative underscored the joint efforts of GCW Parade and Rangyug in providing meaningful platforms for artistic engagement, fostering practical skills, and promoting a vibrant culture of theatre education in Jammu & Kashmir.
