Srinagar, March 30: Kashmir Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) Sempora on Sunday commenced a four-day American Heart Association (AHA) accredited BLS/ACLS Training of Trainers (ToT) programme, becoming the first medical college in Jammu and Kashmir to conduct AHA-accredited BLS, ACLS, PALS and ATLS courses, officials said.

The workshop, scheduled from March 30 to April 2, began with ACLS and BLS Provider courses, followed by a larger Training of Trainers initiative aimed at strengthening emergency response systems in the region’s healthcare sector. The programme is being organised by KMCH in collaboration with Ali’s Sports Academy and PeerWaer Foundation.

The inaugural function was attended by Deputy Director Health Kashmir Dr. Jehanzaib Tanki and Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Government Medical College Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Hina Bashir, among others. Principal/Dean KMCH Prof. Nazir Ahmad Khan, Managing Director Tausif Ahmad, Executive Director Insha Qazi, senior faculty members from KMCH and GMC Srinagar, and representatives from collaborating organisations were also present.

Officials said participating doctors from tertiary medical institutes are receiving hands-on training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and management of medical emergencies. The faculty for the programme is aligned with the Life Support Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS), an authorised AHA training centre in Mumbai.

The training team includes Dr. Ajaz Desai, Director LIHS Mumbai; Dr. Amol Pradhan, Consultant Anaesthesia, Hiranandani Hospital Mumbai; and Dr. Sonal Shah, Consultant Emergency Medicine, PD Hinduja Hospital Khar Mumbai.

Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director Insha Qazi said the workshop marks the first such comprehensive AHA-accredited training programme in the Kashmir division hosted by a private medical college. She said the initiative is intended to equip doctors and healthcare professionals with updated lifesaving and emergency response skills.

Qazi said healthcare professionals from Government Medical Colleges, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), and other institutions are participating in the programme. She stated that such training programmes are aimed at strengthening emergency medical preparedness in the region.

Managing Director Tausif Ahmad said advanced training initiatives would enhance clinical skills and emergency response capabilities across Jammu and Kashmir. College authorities also unveiled a brochure for upcoming AHA-accredited PALS and ATLS courses.

Officials said the courses are in line with the latest guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC), and the institution intends to continue similar programmes in the future.
