First Freight Train Reaches Kashmir, PM Calls It ‘Great Day for Connectivity’

NEW DELHI, Aug 9 — In a historic first for Jammu and Kashmir’s connectivity, a loaded goods train from Ambala arrived at the newly-commissioned Anantnag Goods Shed on Friday afternoon, carrying a consignment of cement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the development, calling it a “great day for commerce and connectivity” that would enhance progress and prosperity in the Valley. “It will enhance both progress and prosperity,” he posted on X in response to a message from Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Vaishnaw shared a video of the train’s arrival and described it as a “significant milestone in connecting the Kashmir region to the national freight network.” He said the rail link would help reduce transportation costs for residents and improve supply lines for essential goods.

The freight connectivity is part of the long-awaited Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla rail link project, which aims to integrate the Valley more closely with the rest of the country and boost economic activity by enabling faster, cheaper transport of goods.
