Every Drop is Sacred: From Ancient Wisdom to India’s Water Revolution

Anzar Fayaz

“India’s movement to conserve water is not only about ensuring adequate supply. It is about strengthening resilience against climate change, securing food production, protecting public health and safeguarding the future of coming generations.”

Water is the foundation of every civilization. Water gives life to the soil helps animals and plants grow and makes sure people have food to eat. Water is also very important for factories and other industries.. These days water is in big trouble. Cities are growing fast factories are making a lot of waste the weather is changing and there are more people than ever before. Because of this our rivers are getting polluted the water under the ground is going down. The special places where water collects are disappearing.

The problem we are facing is not just that we do not have water. The problem is that we are not taking care of the water we have. If we keep wasting water the results will be very bad. So it is very good that India is trying to save water. This is one of the important things we can do for the Earth.

During the 135th episode of Mann Ki Baat on 28 June 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the country that every drop of rainwater is very important. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the conservation of “every single drop of rainwater. “This was not something the government said. It was a call to all people to wake up and take care of the water.

The nationwide Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Catch the Rain campaign has emerged as a major national effort to conserve rainwater recharge groundwater and restore traditional water bodies. which started on 4 July 2026 and ended on 4 August 2026 asked people to collect rainwater fill up the water under the ground and fix the water places. The campaign said, “Do not let any drop of rainwater go to waste.”

India has always known that water is very important. A time ago before we had modern laws to protect the Earth Indian people knew that water was sacred. Our old books, like the Rigveda say that rivers are like mothers and they help our civilization grow. The books also say that water is the source of health, purity and spiritual well-being. We never thought of rivers as just water flowing. We thought of them as living things that we should respect and take care of.

The Atharva Veda states that water has the ability to rejuvenate both the mind and body. The Veda makes the case that the presence of clean water is essential for life. The Yajur Veda promotes the importance of living a balanced life and not depleting the earth’s resources. The sentiment put forth by the Veda is similar to modern day ideas when discussing how to preserve the planet. The Manusmriti highlights the importance of not polluting water. Specifically, not disposing of waste in water bodies. The Manusmriti offers a sentiment that remains true today. The community as a whole benefits when we ensure that water remains clean.

The Arthashastra discusses the importance of taking of water infrastructure, like storing and transporting clean water, and the importance of fortifying the systems of water. The texts propose that it is important to punish those who transgress against the systems.. So taking care of water was not a spiritual thing but also a part of good governance.

These old books show us that taking care of the Earth is not an idea in India. India has always known that we should respect the Earth and its resources. Today we are using these ideas to make new plans to save water.

The Government of India has started a few projects to save water. One of them is the Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain. This project started on World Water Day in 2021. Has become one of the biggest movements to save water in the country. Every year the project does things to help save water like collecting rainwater fixing old water places and planting more trees.

Another project is the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari. This project asks people to help save water by making structures to collect rainwater and fixing water places. Many people have helped, including schools, villages and companies. The results have been very good. In the year of the project we made more than 27 lakh structures to collect rainwater, which is much more than our target.

Saving water is not just the governments job. Every person can help. Every house can collect rainwater. Every village can fix its water places. Every school can teach children about saving water. Every farmer can use water to grow crops. Every person can help keep the rivers and lakes clean.

We should also protect the forests and the special places where water collects. Trees help fill up the water under the ground and keep the soil from washing. The special water places naturally clean the water. Help animals live. So saving water also means taking care of the Earth.

India’s movement to save water is not about having enough water. It is about being strong against the changing weather growing food keeping people healthy and making sure our children have a good future. Every drop of water we save today will help us tomorrow.

The Prime Minister has asked people to save water times.. The government cannot do it alone. We all have to help. The strength of this water movement is in the millions of people who are taking care of the water in their homes, schools and villages.

This water movement is really about the people who are working to protect the water.

Our ancestors taught us that we should not try to control the water or the nature, around us. We should respect the water and the nature.

The people who are part of this water movement are doing a job of taking care of the water in their homes, schools and villages.

The water movement is very important. The people who are working for this water movement are really making a difference by respecting the water and the nature. Rivers are not places to throw waste. Lakes are not places to dump things. Rain is not something that happens sometimes. Water is life.

Our old books taught us to respect water. Science teaches us to save water. The government gives us the tools to protect water. Now it is up, to us to do something.

If every person saves water protects the water places and keeps the water clean India will not have water problems anymore.. India can show the world how to save water. When we save water we save our civilization.. When we respect every drop of water we make our future safe.
