Ensuring Food Security
In a significant move towards strengthening food security for marginalized sections of society, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has introduced the 'Prime Minister's Food Supplementation for Priority Households Scheme' for the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir much to the relief of lakhs of people. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility, affordability, and availability of an adequate quantity of food to Priority Households (PHH). Currently, under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, 35 kilograms of food grains are provided per household to 2.29 lakh households in the UT, benefiting the poorest of the poor. Additionally, PHH beneficiaries receive 5 kilograms of food grains per person free of cost. The new scheme seeks to augment monthly food availability to the PHH category at a subsidized rate, ensuring that it does not exceed 35 kilograms per household. It is noteworthy that the augmentation was discontinued last year following the discontinuation of the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS-D) by the Government of India. However, the scheme has now been revived at a revised price. The launch of the new scheme aims to alleviate the financial burden on poor families, while guaranteeing access to food and nutritional security. Under the Prime Minister's Food Supplementation Scheme, households with one beneficiary will receive an additional allocation of 5 kilograms, while households with beneficiaries ranging from 2 to 5 will receive an additional 10 kilograms each month, without exceeding the maximum allocation per household. To ensure the availability of subsidized rice for the additional allocation, the Jammu and Kashmir Government will procure rice from the Government of India at Rs. 34 per kilogram, providing it to beneficiaries at Rs. 25 per kilogram. This subsidized rate ensures a subsidy of Rs. 9 per kilogram. However, it is important to note that the implementation of the new scheme will involve a financial implication of over Rs. 180 Crore annually. Furthermore, the Lt. Governor has expressed the administration's intention to include wheat in the scheme once the Government of India restarts the sale of wheat under the OMSS-D. The Prime Minister's Food Supplementation for Priority Households Scheme underscores the commitment of the Jammu and Kashmir administration to prioritize the welfare of its citizens and ensure that no one goes hungry. By addressing the food security needs of the marginalized sections, this initiative will significantly contribute to uplifting vulnerable communities and fostering a more inclusive society. It is now imperative for the government, civil society, and individuals alike to support and contribute to the successful implementation of this scheme. Only through collaborative efforts can we truly achieve a society where every individual has access to adequate and affordable food, promoting their overall well-being and ensuring a brighter future for all.
