PAMPORE, December 03: The Department of Social Welfare on Wednesday celebrated World Disability Day at Palaash Patalbagh in Pampore area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Members of the Handicapped Association Pulwama actively participated in the event. The programme was presided over by District Social Welfare Officer Pulwama, Azhar Amin, and attended by Tehsil Social Welfare Officers, officials from the Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women, and representatives of the District Legal Services Authority Pulwama.
This year’s theme, “Promoting disability-inclusive societies to advance social progress,” emphasizes empowering persons with disabilities to shape their own futures and contribute meaningfully to society.
Speakers highlighted various government initiatives and welfare measures for persons with disabilities, including reservations in government jobs, hospitals, railways, public transport, as well as pension schemes and other support systems.
The event aimed to promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and raise awareness about their inclusion in political, social, economic, and cultural spheres.
At the conclusion of the programme, four scooties were distributed among persons hailing from different areas of the district with disabilities in the presence of members of the Handicapped Association Pulwama and officials of the District Social Welfare Office Pulwama.
Speaking to Kashmir Convener, Social Welfare officials said that on third December, we observe World Disability Day. Today as well, we organised a Disability Day awareness programme in the Palaash Patalbagh area of Pampore under the supervision of the District Social Welfare Officer Pulwama. Members of the Handicapped Association participated, and both Social Welfare officials and heads of disability associations highlighted various issues faced by people with disabilities.
After the programme, we distributed four Scootys. Throughout the year, we review how many people have applied, and this year we have distributed Scootys on different occasions as part of our ongoing support..
