New Delhi, Oct 21: The Ministry of Defence on Wednesday signed a ₹770-crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR-I) for the Indian Army.

The contract was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, according to the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

The LLLR-I systems are designed to detect and track fighter-sized aerial targets as well as mini and micro drones. They also have the capability to prioritise aerial targets, strengthening the Army’s ability to counter threats posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

The procurement is aimed at enhancing the Army’s air defence capabilities amid evolving aerial threats.

According to the Defence Ministry, the contract also supports the government’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing under the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. The initiative is expected to contribute to the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and strengthen efforts towards a self-reliant defence industry.
