Anantnag, March 5: Several Asha workers sustained minor injuries after the ceiling of the conference hall at Dooru Town Hall in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district partially collapsed during a Programme on drug-free society organized by the Rural Development Department (RDD) on Thursday.

Officials said the programme was attended by employees from various departments including Education, Health and ICDS.

Witnesses said that in the middle of the Programme, a portion of the ceiling suddenly collapsed with a loud noise, triggering panic among the participants present in the hall.

Some female employees reportedly lost consciousness due to the shock, while several others suffered minor injuries.

The injured employees were shifted to a nearby hospital where they received first aid and were later discharged, officials said.

An official said that fortunately the ceiling did not fall directly onto the floor but remained hanging, which prevented what could have turned into a major tragedy.

“Had the ceiling fallen completely, the consequences could have been serious,” the official said.

Authorities said an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the incident. [KNT]
