Cabinet Secretary Calls for Sovereign AI, Resilient Supply Chains at Army Conference

New Delhi, April 14: T. V. Somanathan on Tuesday addressed senior leadership of the Indian Army at the ongoing Army Commanders’ Conference, outlining key priorities for national preparedness, including sovereign artificial intelligence, resilient supply chains, and enhanced civil-military coordination.

Speaking at the conference, the Cabinet Secretary highlighted the need to develop indigenous artificial intelligence capabilities to support national security objectives in a rapidly evolving global environment. He emphasised that building sovereign AI models is essential to reduce dependence on external systems and ensure strategic autonomy.

He also underscored the importance of resilient supply chains in safeguarding national interests, particularly in the context of emerging geopolitical challenges. He said disruptions in global supply networks necessitate a robust domestic framework to maintain continuity in critical sectors.

Addressing broader aspects of preparedness, Somanathan stressed the importance of stronger civil-military cooperation and called for a whole-of-nation approach to effectively respond to both conflict and peacetime challenges. He noted that coordinated efforts across government institutions, industry, and society are necessary to enhance national resilience.

On the concept of Atmanirbharta, the Cabinet Secretary said self-reliance should be viewed as a comprehensive national approach rather than a standalone policy objective. He stated that achieving this goal requires participation from all sectors, institutions, and citizens.

Officials said the address formed part of ongoing deliberations at the Army Commanders’ Conference, which is focused on strengthening national security, operational preparedness, and institutional synergy.
