Bandipora, Jan 20: The Wullar Battalion of Indian Army on Tuesday began a three-day self-defence training camp for boys and girls of Bandipora district at Government High School, Malangam, as part of its continued outreach to engage local youth in constructive and confidence-building activities.
An official spokesperson said the camp is aimed at imparting basic self-defence skills with a focus on personal safety, physical fitness, discipline and self-reliance. Participants are being trained in practical techniques to respond effectively to everyday safety challenges, while also being encouraged to develop confidence and mental resilience.
Organised under the Indian Army’s community engagement initiatives, the programme seeks to raise awareness about personal security and promote positive alternatives such as sports and fitness, particularly among youth in rural areas. The initiative also aims to keep young people meaningfully engaged and away from social evils, including drug abuse.
Several national-level players are participating in the camp as trainers, imparting professional self-defence techniques and sharing their experiences to motivate the participants. Addressing the media, national Wushu player Sabkat Milak said such programmes play an important role in encouraging youth, especially girls, to take up sports and structured physical activities. She said self-defence training empowers girls to protect themselves in different situations and strengthens broader efforts to steer youth away from drugs and other harmful influences.
Participants expressed gratitude to the Indian Army for organising the camp, stating that the training had boosted their confidence and motivated them to remain active and pursue sports and fitness-oriented lifestyles.
