Bandipora–Gurez Road Reopens for One-Way Traffic After Snow Clearance

Gurez, Jan 3: After remaining closed due to harsh winter conditions, the Bandipora–Gurez road, the only surface link connecting the remote Gurez valley with the rest of Kashmir, was reopened for one-way traffic on Friday, officials said.

Authorities restored vehicular movement on the around 85–86 km long strategic road after an improvement in weather conditions and the successful completion of snow clearance operations. As per officials, controlled traffic has been allowed from the Gurez side towards Bandipora.

The decision to reopen the road was taken following a detailed assessment of road conditions and safety parameters, particularly along snow-bound and avalanche-prone stretches, which pose heightened risks during the winter months.

“The road has been opened for one-way movement after clearance work and safety evaluation. Traffic will be regulated strictly,” officials said, adding that the route remains vulnerable to sudden weather changes.

The Bandipora–Gurez road frequently remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, often cutting off the valley for extended periods. Its reopening provides critical relief to residents, facilitating the movement of essential supplies and easing connectivity.

Authorities have advised commuters to strictly adhere to official advisories, maintain lane discipline, avoid unnecessary travel, and cooperate with traffic police and road maintenance staff deployed along the route.

Officials further said that continuous monitoring of the road conditions is underway, and future traffic movement will depend entirely on prevailing weather and safety considerations.
