Sonamarg, March 6: The Sonamarg Development Authority has ordered the immediate suspension of snowmobile operations in the Sonamarg meadow area citing environmental concerns and the need to protect the fragile grassland ecosystem.

According to an official order issued by the authority, continued operation of snowmobile bikes in the meadow was found to be causing damage to the natural grass surface, particularly due to inadequate snowfall and the approaching end of the winter season.

Officials said the decision was taken in the interest of environmental protection and to safeguard the eco fragile meadow that forms a key part of the Sonamarg tourist destination.

The order stated that the natural grass surface of the meadow has become exposed in several areas due to insufficient snowfall, and the movement of snowmobiles was resulting in ecological degradation.

Accordingly, authorities directed that all snowmobile operations within the meadow area stand suspended with immediate effect.

The Sonamarg Development Authority said the measure was necessary to prevent further damage and ensure the protection and conservation of the environmental integrity of the meadow.

All concerned operators, associations and enforcement agencies have been instructed to strictly comply with the order and ensure its effective implementation.

The order warned that any violation would invite action under relevant environmental and regulatory provisions, including cancellation of permissions.

The directive has also been circulated to district and tourism authorities as well as law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance on the ground.

Copies of the order have been sent to the Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Director Tourism Kashmir, Sub Divisional Magistrate Kangan, DySP Kangan and Station House Officer Sonamarg for information and necessary action.

The Wildlife Department, Tourist Police Sonamarg, enforcement wing of the Sonamarg Development Authority and the Snow Bike Association have also been directed to ensure immediate compliance with the order. [KNT]
