Jammu, Jan 21: Tension prevailed briefly in Gujjar Nagar area of Jammu on Wednesday after members of a lesser-known organization, Shiv Sena Hindustan, attempted to forcibly shut down meat shops in the locality. The attempt was foiled after shopkeepers resisted and police rushed to the spot, following which the group fled.
Shopkeepers said the workers of the organization arrived in the area and tried to intimidate them into closing their shops. The shop owners strongly objected, questioning the legality of the demand and asserting that they were carrying out licensed and lawful business.
“Why should we close our shops? We are not selling anything illegal. We have valid licences and are doing legal trade,” shopkeepers said, adding that they confronted the workers, who fled after facing resistance from locals.
Police said they rushed to the spot after receiving information, but by the time they arrived, the protesting workers had already left the area. No arrests were reported, and the situation remained under control.
Several locals alleged that such lesser-known political workers were attempting to disrupt peace and harmony in the area. They termed the incident an unnecessary provocation aimed at dividing communities over non-issues.
“We sell chicken to every community. These unknown workers tried to threaten us and even attempted to loot our shops,” shopkeepers alleged.
Inhabitants of the area said such actions should be dealt with firmly to prevent communal tension. They urged authorities to ensure that peace and normalcy are maintained and that no group is allowed to intimidate traders engaged in lawful activities. [KNT]
