Attacking Constitution, secularism is BJP’s sole ideology: Congress leader Irfan Lone

Jammu, Feb 13: Congress MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone on Friday accused the Bhartiya Janta party (BJP) of attempting to create divisions between regions and communities by spreading hatred.

Speaking to Kashmir Convener outside the lagislative assembly MLA Wagoora-Kreeri Irfan Hafiz Lone said BJP’s ideology is to fight brother against brother. Their ideology is to sow the seeds of hatred. This is an attack on the constitution. This is an attack on secularism,” Lone said.

MLA Lone alleged that the BJP and RSS were trying to create a rift between Jammu and Kashmir. He asserted that such tactics would be defeated politically.

Drawing a historical parallel, Lone claimed that while the Congress party was fighting for the country’s freedom, the RSS was allied with the British. “So if they say that Kashmiris have ploughed the land in Jammu, we say you should not be surprised by this,” he said.

The Congress legislator credited his party for building India’s foundational infrastructure post-Independence, citing AIIMS, railways, and airports as examples. He also mentioned the successful polio eradication campaign as a key achievement of past Congress governments.

Lone posed several questions to the BJP regarding the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.

“You said on August 5 that everything will be fine. Then why did the unfortunate incident of Pahalgam happen? Why did our target killings happen? Why haven’t our Kashmiri Pandit brothers come back?” he questioned.

Accusing the BJP of stifling dissent, the MLA claimed that any mention of issues like unemployment or inflation is met with accusations of being anti-national. He described the current atmosphere as worse than an “undeclared emergency,” marked by “arrogance.”

“Inshallah, we will fight peacefully and we will defeat them politically. Their political boat is about to sink,” Lone added.
