Army Pays Homage to Major P. Purushottam, Other Fallen Heroes of 1999 Terrorist Attack
Srinagar, November 3: The Indian Army on Monday paid rich tributes to its bravehearts who laid down their lives while fighting a fidayeen attack at the Public Relations Office in Badami Bagh Cantonment, Srinagar, in 1999.
In a statement issued to Kashmir Convener, defence spokesperson said in a solemn remembrance ceremony held at the Public Relations Office, all ranks gathered to honour the memory of Major P. Purushottam, Subedar Brahm Dass Sharma, and four other soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice defending their post and protecting civilians during the terrorist assault.
On November 3, 1999, terrorists launched a fidayeen attack targeting the office of the Public Relations Officer (Defence). Despite being heavily outnumbered, Major Purushottam, then serving as PRO (Defence), and his comrades fought valiantly, ensuring the safety of journalists and civilians present at the site. Their extraordinary courage and presence of mind prevented further loss of life even as they fell in the line of duty.

In his tribute, the Public Relations Office (Defence), Srinagar, stated that “the gallant act of these bravehearts saved civilian lives while they made the supreme sacrifice. Their selfless courage and devotion to duty continue to inspire generations of soldiers.”
As wreaths were laid and prayers offered, the ceremony echoed the Indian Army’s unwavering respect for those who uphold the nation’s security and honour through their ultimate sacrifice. The Army reaffirmed its commitment to remembering the legacy of its heroes, whose bravery remains an enduring source of pride and inspiration.
