Rajouri, Apr 13 : Maj Gen Kaushik Mukherjee, General Officer Commanding (GOC) on Monday said that the Indian Army is in heightened state of alert along the strategically sensitive Rajouri and Poonch sectors, with troops ready to give a “befitting response” to any provocation from across the Line of Control (LoC).

“We are on high alert. Given the situation prevailing across the border, we are fully prepared to give an appropriate response to any threat,” said Maj Gen Kaushik Mukherjee, General Officer Commanding (GOC), speaking at the ‘Rajouri Day’ commemorations.

In a clear message to Islamabad, he said the Army remains committed to peace, “but any hostile action by Pakistan will be met with decisive force”.

The GOC also remembered soldiers who fell during the 1947-48 operations to liberate Rajouri from Pakistani raiders, and those killed in Operation Sindoor, asserting that the nation “will not forget its martyrs”.

Significantly, Mukherjee highlighted the growing role of civilians as a “force multiplier” in countering cross-border threats. “The cooperation of local people is our major strength. They stand shoulder to shoulder with security forces to foil any attempt to disturb peace,” he said.

The Army has also stepped up community outreach in the twin border districts, launching a project to manufacture interlocking tiles from plastic waste — aimed at both environmental protection and generating local livelihoods. Under the Digital Bharat Darshan programme, government school students are being virtually connected to major cities every month, an initiative the GOC said was critical to countering radicalisation.

“We are vigilant. And we are ready,” Mukherjee said, reiterating that any misadventure from across the border will not go unanswered.
