Indian Army Hosts Symposium To Honour General Zorawar Singh at Manekshaw Centre
New Delhi, April 11: The Indian Army’s Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment, in collaboration with the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), hosted a prestigious symposium titled “General Zorawar Singh: Up, Close and Personal” at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi Cantonment on Thursday.
The event commemorated the legendary military achievements and enduring legacy of General Zorawar Singh, hailed as one of India’s greatest military commanders.
Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event drew participation from esteemed veterans, serving officers—particularly from the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and Ladakh Scouts—their families, and prominent military historians and scholars.
The symposium spotlighted General Zorawar Singh’s strategic genius, exceptional leadership in high-altitude warfare, and his foundational role in shaping both the territorial integrity of Jammu and Kashmir and the ethos of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Regiment.
A major highlight of the event was the release of two significant military history books by General Dwivedi:

“The Warrior Gurkha” by Mrs. Madhulika Thapa, daughter of Param Vir Chakra awardee Lt Col Dhan Singh Thapa.

“A Kashmir Knight and the Last 50 Years of the Princely State of J&K” by Lt Gen Ghanshyam Singh Katoch (Retd).
These books offer deep insights into India’s military heritage and the valor of its armed forces across eras.
On the occasion, General Dwivedi also felicitated the winners of the Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw Essay Competition 2024, organized by CLAWS on the theme “India’s National Security and Emerging Challenges.”
The symposium served as a tribute to General Zorawar Singh’s extraordinary legacy and reaffirmed the Indian Army’s commitment to preserving military history through scholarship, literary contributions, and institutional memory.
