As I stood amidst the mourners, offering Namaz-e-janaza of Dr. Syed ur Rehman today, memories engulfed my mind. While we patiently waited for his body to reach the Jenazahgah, memories of his kindness, dedication, and compassionate care resurfaced, bringing both solace and tears to my eyes.
Dr. Syed ur Rehman breathed his last on Saturday morning in a hospital in New Delhi after losing the brave fight he fought against the disease. He was 62.
The Doctor was humble and friendly demeanor creating an instant connection with every patient who crossed his path. I personally have the first-hand account and hence the witness to his compassion. One particular incident stands out that is etched in my memories.
I vividly recall a Ramadan evening during my school days, when I was most likely in 6th grade (late 90's), and my father suddenly fainted at Iftar time. In our small town of Bandipora, Dr. Syed ur Rehman was the only doctor available, residing in a rented accommodation near Panzoo Medical Hall-a famous medical store in the town.
There were no phones and no men around to get a doctor. I rushed to his rented accommodation- a few meters away from our home, tears streaming down my face, seeking his help. Despite the nearing time to break his fast, he selflessly came barefooted to our house. Yes he couldn’t find any footwear in a hurry and he left barefooted. He ran with me for about 300 meters upto our home and swiftly attended to my father.
He knew my father but had no knowledge of my identity as his son when I reached out to him in desperate need. It was only upon his arrival at my home that he came to know about my identity.
Nonetheless, his response to an unknown plea was nothing short of heartwarming, leaving an indelible imprint not only on my soul but the whole family. This act of selflessness exemplified his unwavering commitment to serving those in need and will forever be etched in my memory.
His expertise and compassion brought solace to our anxious hearts as my father regained his strength soon after. This was just one among many instances that exemplified his unwavering commitment to serving others.
Since that day, whenever the topic of doctors arises within the walls of our home, the name of Dr. Syed Rehman and his selfless act is always at the forefront of our conversations.
It has become an enduring tale that we recount with reverence and admiration. We gather together and offer our heartfelt prayers for his well-being, a small token of gratitude for the profound impact he has had on our lives.
Fast forward to challenging times of the COVID-19 lockdown; when fear gripped even the hearts of doctors. It was during those early days of the lockdown when illness struck our household including my father and my better half. We hurriedly made our way to his private clinic near Nadihal.
In my mind, I was certain that he would be reluctant to examine us, given our flu-like symptoms. However, to my astonishment, I witnessed something truly remarkable. Dr. Syed ur Rehman fearlessly and compassionately examined patients including us, disregarding any personal concerns or reservations.
For such a pious soul, Life was not always easy. He had its share of challenges and hardships as he faced the loss of his beloved wife only a few years ago.
This heartbreaking event left him deeply affected. However, his strength and resilience shone through as he took on the role of a sole parent, caring for his two daughters with immeasurable love and tenderness.
Today, we extend our deepest prayers for his children, wishing them strength and patience to navigate this difficult journey. May Allah grant them solace and comfort in the memories they shared with their remarkable father.
After Funeral prayers led by one of the greatest Islamic Scholars of Kashmir-Mufti Nazir Ahmad Qasmi, as we escorted the deceased doctor to his final resting place and his freinds gently lowered him into the grave, a profound sense of loss enveloped me. It was in that moment, as the earth embraced his mortal remains, that I realized the magnitude of the legacy he leaves behind. Dr. Syed ur Rehman, a name forever etched in my heart.
His selfless service and dedication to his profession serve as an inspiration for aspiring doctors and healthcare professionals. Let us remember him as a beacon of kindness, an embodiment of compassion, and a shining example of what it means to be a true People's doctor.
Doctor May your soul find eternal tranquility in the embrace of the heavens. Your selflessness, compassion, and the profound impact you had on the lives you touched will forever be cherished and remembered.
Rest in peace Doctor!!!
