New Delhi, October 31: The Union Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for submitting applications under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic year 2026-27 to November 15, 2026.

The extension gives eligible students additional time to complete their applications through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

According to the revised schedule, Institute Nodal Officers must complete the first-level verification by November 30, while District Nodal Officers have until December 15 to complete the second-level verification.

The NSP has been accepting applications under the scheme since June 1, 2026. Students must complete their One-Time Registration (OTR) on the portal before applying.

As of October 30, a total of 90,483 fresh and 1,99,531 renewal applications had been submitted.

The scheme aims to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and help them continue their education from Class IX to Class XII. It provides one lakh fresh scholarships every year to eligible Class IX students selected through an examination conducted by their respective State or Union Territory governments.

Selected students receive a scholarship of ₹12,000 annually, transferred directly to their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The scholarship is continued from Classes X to XII through renewal, subject to prescribed academic requirements.

Students must have secured at least 55 per cent marks or equivalent grade in Class VII to appear for the selection test. A relaxation of five percentage points is available for SC/ST students. The annual parental income of applicants must not exceed ₹3.5 lakh.

The scheme covers eligible students studying in State Government, Government-aided and local body schools. (PIB)
