New Delhi, October 30: The National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme has provided personal protective equipment, healthcare support and safety training to a sanitation worker in an effort to improve working conditions and reduce occupational risks.

Ramesh Kumar (name changed), a 37-year-old Scheduled Caste sanitation worker employed as a desludging assistant, received a personal protective equipment (PPE) kit, an Ayushman Bharat Health Card and skill and safety training during 2025–26 under the scheme implemented by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

According to the Ministry, the PPE kit has helped him undertake sanitation-related work with better protection, while the training improved his awareness of occupational hazards and safe work practices. The health card has also strengthened his access to healthcare facilities.

Kumar had faced occupational risks due to inadequate protective equipment and limited access to welfare facilities. The financial constraints associated with low wages, along with responsibility for supporting his family and ageing parents, added to his difficulties.

The Ministry said the interventions had improved his working conditions and confidence. Safer work practices had also contributed to a moderate increase in his income.

The NAMASTE scheme aims to promote a safer and more dignified sanitation ecosystem by extending occupational safety measures, healthcare support and skill development opportunities to sanitation workers.
