Baramulla, Oct 03: Police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday issued a stern advisory against illegal practices and harassment of tourists in the Tangmarg-Kunzer-Gulmarg tourism circuit, warning of strict action against those forcing visitors to change vehicles or overcharging them.

In an official statement, Baramulla Police said it had received specific complaints of service providers fleecing and harassing tourists, and urged visitors to report malpractices immediately.

The advisory specifically addresses the recurring issue of tourists being coerced into changing vehicles at Tangmarg, Kunzer or Gulmarg under the pretext that only local vehicles are permitted to ply in the area. It also warned against stopping tourists from travelling in their own vehicles en route to the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg.

“Any tourist or visitor being overcharged or subjected to harassment by a service provider should report it immediately,” Baramulla Police said, assuring prompt action.

To ensure immediate redressal, the district police have released a list of helpline numbers: Emergency Response Support System (ERSS): 112; PCR Baramulla: 9596767768; SDPO Tangmarg: 9596767705; SHO Gulmarg: 9596767715; SHO Tangmarg: 9596767713; and SHO Kunzer: 9596767714.

The move is being viewed as a significant step to boost tourist confidence and curb the menace of “tourist trap” tactics often reported in the Valley, especially during the peak tourism season, officials said.
