NEW DELHI, AUGUST 26: The Central Government is closely monitoring the situation arising from flash floods in Nepal, with border areas in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh placed on high alert amid the possibility of downstream flooding in the Gandak river, Central government said on Wednesday evening.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Chief Ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh regarding the situation and directed continued vigilance in areas likely to be affected.
In a post on X, Shah described the devastation caused by the floods in Nepal as deeply tragic and conveyed condolences to families who lost loved ones. He said the Government of India stands with Nepal in the hour of crisis.
The local administrations and rescue teams in vulnerable border areas, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been placed on high alert.
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) advisory and media reports, a sudden rise in the water level of the Trishuli river at Furke Khola in Nepal, around 160 km from the Indian border, has been reported following suspected flash flood/GLOF activity near the Nepal-China border. The floodwaters are likely to travel downstream into the Gandak river in India.
The governments of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have taken measures, including evacuation and other support, for communities in vulnerable areas near the India-Nepal border. Both states have been advised to maintain close monitoring.
Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Jal Shakti and Ministry of Defence are also continuously monitoring developments.
The CWC has indicated that water levels in reservoirs on the Nepal side are reducing and the situation remains under control. The Centre said there is currently no need for panic.
Meanwhile, reports of Indian tourists missing in Nepal have also emerged. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued emergency helpline numbers for assistance and information regarding Indian nationals affected by the floods.
