Mehbooba Says Reservation Law Already Exists, Questions Delay in Its Implementation

Srinagar, Aug 15: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti today said that the legal framework for reservation is already in place and the issue now requires implementation.

Mehbooba told reporters that a reservation law had already been passed in 2023 and argued that there was little the opposition could do about its implementation.

Her remarks come amid a prolonged dispute over the present reservation structure, which has drawn strong criticism from sections of Open Merit candidates and students who have demanded a larger share of opportunities in government jobs and professional admissions.

Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Act, 2023, amending the 2004 legislation and changing the statutory framework concerning socially and educationally backward classes, including replacing the earlier terminology of “weak and under-privileged classes” with “other backward classes”.
