New Delhi, Aug 11: National Conference MP Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan on Monday called upon Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to reconsider the proposed Sopore–Kupwara railway line, terming it a strategic necessity for the border district of Kupwara.
During a meeting with the Minister, MP Ramzan pointed out that Kupwara, one of the most remote and strategically sensitive districts of Jammu and Kashmir, remains devoid of any railway connectivity despite its vast geographical spread and population. He asserted that the rail link would provide a vital connection to the district and improve access to forward areas, including Karnah, Keran and Machil.
Describing the project as a potential lifeline for the region, the MP said it would greatly benefit the horticulture and agriculture sectors by enabling faster and cheaper movement of apples and other produce to markets across the country. He further emphasised that the line would give a fillip to tourism, trade and employment generation, while also enhancing healthcare and educational access for the local population.
“The project should be viewed from a long-term socio-economic and strategic perspective, keeping in view the growing population, developmental needs and immense horticultural and tourism potential of the region,” MP Ramzan said.
MP Vaishnaw assured the MP that the matter would be given top priority and that he would be kept apprised of further developments, an official release said. (KNS)
