PAMPORE, August 1: Farmers across Jammu and Kashmir have welcomed the Union Cabinet’s decision to extend the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for another five years, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for continuing financial assistance that they say has become a vital support for farming households.
The Union Cabinet on July 31 approved the extension of the flagship PM-KISAN scheme from the financial year 2026-27 to 2030-31, with its validity now extended up to March 31, 2031.
The government has earmarked a budget outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore (₹3,15,614 crore) for the extended period. Under the scheme, every eligible farmer family will continue to receive ₹6,000 annually in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
Speaking to Kashmir Convener, Progressive farmer and Jammu and Kashmir Kissan Advisory Board member Irshad Ahmad Dar described the extension as a welcome decision that would continue to provide much-needed financial support to farmers.
“We sincerely thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Agriculture Minister for extending this important scheme. PM-KISAN has proved to be a great initiative for the farming community. The assistance helps farmers meet essential agricultural expenses such as purchasing manure, seeds, pesticides, weedicides, farming tools and other inputs. It acts as a strong financial backing, especially during the cultivation season when expenses are high,” Dar said.
Echoing similar views, farmer Rafiq Rasool told Kashmir Convener that the continuation of the scheme would provide relief to thousands of farming families who often face financial constraints during different stages of cultivation.
“We are grateful to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all those associated with this decision. Farming is full of uncertainties, and many farmers experience financial difficulties during the cropping season. The PM-KISAN assistance enables them to continue agricultural operations without interruption and helps them overcome temporary financial crises,” Rasool said.
The farmers told Kashnir Convener that the financial assistance provided under PM-KISAN has been instrumental in meeting cultivation-related expenses, including the purchase of fertilisers, pesticides, medicines and payment of labour charges. They said the scheme has significantly reduced their financial burden and strengthened their confidence to continue farming.
They added that with the scheme now extended until 2031, farming families across the country can look forward to sustained financial support, which they believe will further strengthen the agricultural sector and improve rural livelihoods.
