DRDO Develops First Indigenous 350 kg Thrust Expendable Turbo Jet Engine

New Delhi, July 23: India has successfully developed its first indigenous expendable turbo jet engine in the 350 kg thrust class, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aerospace and defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced on Thursday.

The engine was designed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a DRDO laboratory, and manufactured and assembled by Hyderabad-based Azad Engineering, which was identified as the industry partner for the project.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the engine was successfully realised and delivered to GTRE by Azad Engineering on July 22, marking the culmination of years of precision engineering, advanced manufacturing and close collaboration between India’s scientific and industrial communities.

The engine was formally handed over by Azad Engineering Chief Executive Officer Rakesh Chopdar to Director General (Aeronautical Systems) Dr. K. Rajalakshmi Menon and GTRE Director Dr. S. V. Ramanamurty.

The Ministry described jet engine technology as one of the world’s most complex engineering domains, mastered by only a handful of countries due to its demanding requirements in precision engineering, advanced metallurgy and high-end manufacturing standards.

It said the successful development and delivery of the indigenous engine reflects the growing technological capabilities of India’s defence industry and its increasing ability to manufacture sophisticated aerospace systems designed within the country.

Defence Secretary, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, Rajesh Kumar Singh, congratulated GTRE and its industry partner on the achievement, stating that the collaboration had transformed a long-term vision into a historic milestone for India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.
