KU VC inaugurates Employees’ Cricket Tournament

Srinagar, July 01: Continuing its series of employees’ sporting events aimed at mobilising employees at workplace for their health benefits, the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPE&S) University of Kashmir ( KU)on Wednesday kickstarted the employees’ Cricket Tournament at Ground ”A”of the University.

The tournament was formally declared open by the Vice-Chancellor KU Prof. Nilofer Khan, in the presence of Registrar KU Prof. Naseer Iqbal, faculty members, officers, employees, and sports enthusiasts.

The tournament has drawn an enthusiastic participation from employees representing various teaching departments, administrative units, and satellite campuses of the University. To showcase the rich natural heritage of Kashmir, the nine participating teams have been named after the valley’s iconic rivers, adding a unique local flavour to the competition. The tournament is being conducted on a league-cum-knockout basis.

The inaugural match was played between Team Sindh and Team Lidder, with Team Sindh emerging victorious after an impressive all-round performance.

In the second match, Team Jehlum defeated Team Chenab by five runs in an exciting contest. Amjad Qadir, Cricket Coach exhibited a remarkable all-round display for Team Jhelum. He scored a valuable 42 runs and claimed three wickets, playing a pivotal role in his team’s emphatic victory in the opening encounter.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor KU Prof. Nilofer Khan appreciated the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports for conceiving , conceptualising and organizing the Employees’ Sports tournament .

She further said that such initiatives provide employees with an opportunity to rejuvenate themselves, relieve workplace stress, and strengthen bonds of friendship and teamwork beyond their routine professional responsibilities.

Addressing the gathering, Registrar KU Prof. Naseer Iqbal underscored the importance of institutional sporting activities and called for making the Employees’ Tournament a regular annual feature of the University Sports calendar.

He remarked that such initiatives play a vital role in enhancing the overall health, morale, and productivity of employees while nurturing a spirit of unity and cooperation across departments and Campuses.

The cricket tournament is being coordinated by Assistant Director DPE&S, Dr. Nadeem Ahmad Dar.
