Sopore, May 11: BJP general secretary Ashok Koul on Monday advocated for seizure and destruction of properties owned by drug peddlers in Jammu & Kashmir, asserting that those who have amassed crores through the illegal trade should be “thrown out”.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Sopore, BJP senior leader praised Lt Governor Manoj Sinha’s anti-drug campaign as “very commendable”, saying the 100-day drug-free programme had evoked a massive response across the union territory.

“Wherever LG goes, thousands of people gather. An atmosphere has been created across the entire district headquarters that we must stay away from drugs. We appreciate their work,” Koul said.

His remarks came days after the Health Minister spoke against destroying properties of those involved in the narcotics trade only in Kashmir while more addicts are in Jammu, Koul strongly disagreed with that stance.

“From the 1990s, this has been happening in Jammu & Kashmir, especially in Kashmir. We say drug peddlers who have made property worth crores through this should be thrown out. All their property should be seized and destroyed,” he asserted.

On the issue of wine shops operating alongside the drug trade, Ashok Koul said society needs to be made aware against alcohol, drugs and cigarettes.

“Every cigarette box clearly says smoking is injurious to health, yet people consume it. Now it is up to our society to make them understand they must stay away from drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes,” he added.
