Tangmarg, Apr 22: Marking the first anniversary of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 tourists, the Traders and Civil Society of Tangmarg on Wednesday organised a candlelight tribute, asserting that the tourism industry remains the backbone of the region’s economy.

The attack, which took place last year in the south Kashmir tourist resort, had not only led to loss of innocent lives but also severely impacted livelihoods dependent on the hospitality sector, local stakeholders said.

Speaking on the occasion, members of the trading community and civil society expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and reiterated their commitment to welcoming visitors.

“Tourists are our life, tourists are our pride. Today, we lit a candle in Tangmarg. All stakeholders—from the ATV station to the taxi union—participated,” a local organiser said.

The participants observed a solemn silence and lit candles to pray for the peace of the departed souls.

“We are deeply saddened. This sadness will remain with us for centuries because this incident happened in Pahalgam. We will observe this day every year,” another speaker added.

The gathering also sought to send a strong message to potential travellers across the country, emphasising that Kashmir remains safe and welcoming.

“There is no tension. Tourists can visit Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam without fear. We are ready for you anytime. Kashmir is yours,” the organiser said, adding, “Inshallah, tourist footfall will increase further.”

The traders condemned the attack both last year and again on the anniversary, vowing to stand united with the nation.

“We want our country to be safe, especially for our tourists. Those who were martyred—may they find peace. We are with the whole country,” they said.

The candlelight vigil was jointly organised by the Tangmarg ATV Association and the local taxi stand union, with the president of the taxi stand also present.
