Family Alleges Medical Negligence in Woman’s Death, Seeks Probe in Srinagar

Srinagar, April 21: A family from Srinagar has alleged medical negligence in the death of a 45-year-old woman and demanded a judicial inquiry into the circumstances leading to her demise.

According to a written representation submitted to authorities, Nighat Tariq, a resident of the Srinagar and mother of three, died following complications after undergoing treatment at Kidney Hospital Sonwar.

The family stated that she was admitted on March 30 for a gallbladder surgery and kidney stent procedure and was under the care of doctors in the hospital.

In the representation, the family alleged that her condition deteriorated steadily post-surgery, with a sharp drop in haemoglobin levels and complications indicated in diagnostic reports. They claimed that despite visible warning signs, there was no timely escalation of care and that she was discharged without adequate monitoring.

The family further alleged that on April 11 night, when her condition worsened critically, the hospital lacked essential emergency support, including proper oxygen supply, ICU facilities, and ambulance services. They claimed they had to arrange transport on their own before shifting her to Super Specialty Hospital Shireen Bagh.

“She was struggling to breathe, but there was no adequate response system in place,” the family said, adding that doctors at the referral hospital attempted to stabilise her with multiple blood transfusions and ventilator support. However, she succumbed the following day.

The family has also raised concerns about alleged tampering with potential evidence, claiming that certain videos from the patient’s phone were deleted by an individual, and sought investigation into the matter.

Seeking accountability, the family has demanded a judicial and independent probe into the incident, action against those found responsible, and an inquiry into the alleged lack of emergency infrastructure at the hospital.

Officials from the concerned hospital could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
