Jammu, Mar 28: The Jammu and Kashmir government is considering a proposal to provide 200 units of free electricity per month to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families through the installation of 2 kW rooftop solar systems, but has ruled out any reconsideration of the recent power tariff hike.
The Legislative Assembly was informed on Saturday that modalities for the solar scheme were being worked out. In a written reply to a question by Legislator Advocate Irfan Hafiz Lone, the government said the proposal envisages the installation of Rooftop Solar (RTS) systems for AAY households, each with a capacity of 2 kW.
“The key benefit of this model is that each beneficiary household shall be provided free electricity up to 200 units per month, commencing from the date of commissioning of the respective RTS systems,” the government said.
MLA Lone had sought details on steps being taken to provide free power to economically challenged families and whether the government intended to review the recent power tariff hike under the flat rate category until the modalities for the free power scheme were finalized.
On the request to reconsider the tariff hike, the government told the House that there was no such proposal under consideration.
