DIPR Shopian Organises Awareness Programme on Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan at GHSS Zainapora

Shopian, March 12: Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) Shopian on Thursday organised an awareness programme at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Zainapora in Shopian district.

 

An official spokesperson said the programme was organised in collaboration with the Education Department under the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign of the Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan.

 

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Zainapora Bilal Ahmed attended the event as the chief guest. Addressing the participants, he outlined measures being taken by the administration to address illegal cultivation of cannabis and destruction of wild bhung in the subdivision.

He said that through sustained efforts of the district administration, more than 40 hectares of land previously used for poppy and cannabis cultivation had been converted to sustainable and cash crops.

He urged residents to cooperate with the administration in curbing drug abuse and illegal cultivation. The SDM also advised students to avoid narcotics and contribute to efforts aimed at building a drug-free society.

Chief Education Officer, District Information Officer and other speakers also addressed the gathering, highlighting concerns related to drug abuse and the need for coordinated action by institutions and the community. They stressed the role of awareness, public participation and youth engagement in preventing substance abuse and promoting healthier lifestyles.

As part of the programme, students from UPS Safanagri and members of Raja Art and Cultural Foundation Dooru presented two skits highlighting the harmful effects of drug abuse. The performances were attended by students, teachers and officials.

Slogan writing and painting competitions were also held on the theme of a drug-free society, with participation from 30 students representing different schools. In the painting competition, Ifra Jan secured first position, followed by Furqaan Mushtaq in second place and Zargar Yasir in third place. In the slogan writing competition, Misbha Afzal secured first position, Farhana Hussain second, and Sana Shabir third.

Winners were awarded mementos and certificates, while other participants were recognized for their involvement in the event.

Officials including the Tehsildar Zainapora, Principal of GHSS Zainapora, Station House Officer Zainapora, teachers and staff were also present. Students participating in the programme pledged to contribute to efforts aimed at promoting a drug-free society.
