Jammu, Feb 20: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday informed the Legislative Assembly that more than 3,600 fishermen families across the Union Territory have been provided low-cost houses under various central schemes, while categorically ruling out any proposal to allot five marlas of land to landless families from the community.

In a written reply to a question by legislator Irshad Rasool Kar, the minister incharge of Animal/Sheep Husbandry & Fisheries detailed the welfare measures extended to the fishermen community under schemes like Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the J&K Competitiveness Improvement of Agriculture and Allied Sectors Project (JKCIP).

The minister as per Kashmir Convener said these schemes provide livelihood assistance, nutritional support, replacement of boats and nets, and ice boxes to traditional fishermen.

On housing, the government disclosed that 3,605 fishermen families benefited from low-cost houses between 2015-16 and 2023-24 under the erstwhile Blue Revolution scheme and later under PMMSY.

However, the minister informed the House that there is currently “no dedicated or active scheme” for construction of low-cost houses for fishermen, and that the government has no proposal under consideration to provide five marlas of land to landless fishermen families.

The reply stated that fishermen are eligible for benefits strictly as per eligibility criteria and operational guidelines of schemes like HADP, PMMSY and JKCIP.
