Srinagar, Feb 11: CSIR–Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), Srinagar Branch, on Tuesday concluded a three-day skill development training programme on quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), aimed at strengthening practical competencies in advanced molecular biology techniques.

The programme brought together around 20 participants from different parts of the country, including students, researchers and laboratory professionals. It was designed to provide hands-on, bench-level training in gene expression analysis, covering the complete workflow from sample preparation to result interpretation.

During the programme, participants received practical training in RNA isolation with emphasis on extracting high-quality RNA, contamination control and yield optimisation. Sessions were also held on reverse transcription and primer strategies, focusing on optimised cDNA synthesis and appropriate primer design. The second day of the programme focused on qRT-PCR assay design, including training in both SYBR Green and probe-based approaches, along with instrument setup and execution of runs.

The training further included troubleshooting and data analysis sessions, addressing issues such as low yields, non-specific amplification, efficiency variations and inter-run variability. Participants were also sensitised about good laboratory practices, with special emphasis on reproducibility, contamination prevention and quality assurance protocols.

Director CSIR-IIIM, Dr Zabeer Ahmed, who was the chief guest at the valedictory function, highlighted the growing importance of qRT-PCR in agriculture and health sciences. He said the technology has emerged as a game-changer in diagnostics and research, and encouraged participants to contribute to the vision of “Viksit Bharat @ 2047” by applying advanced scientific skills in their respective fields.

Senior Principal Scientist and programme organiser Dr Nasheeman Ashraf urged participants to integrate the acquired molecular biology techniques into their professional work to strengthen India’s scientific capacity in agriculture, healthcare and climate resilience. The programme was co-organised by Dr Syed Riyaz Ul Hassan and Dr Phalisteen Sultan, who conducted hands-on sessions in RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis and qRT-PCR.

The event was held under the patronage of Er Abdul Rahim, Chief Scientist and Head, CSIR-IIIM Srinagar Branch, and coordinated by Dr Nasir Ul Rasheed, Principal Scientist and Nodal Skill Development. The valedictory function was moderated by Dr Ishfaq Majid Hurrah.
