BJP Govt ‘Betraying Trust’ on J&K Statehood: MLA Irshad Rasool Kar

Warns People of J&K ‘Will Not Tolerate’ Delay; Says Centre Going Back on ‘Solemn’ Parliament Promise

Jammu, Feb 03: Senior legislator Irshad Rasool Kar launched a sharp attack on the Centre on Tuesday over the “unending delay” in restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He warned that its perceived “betrayal of trust” will not be tolerated by the people of the Union Territory.

Speaking to Kashmir Convener on the sidelines of a budget session in the Jammu assembly, MLA Kar accused the BJP-led government of reneging on a “solemn commitment” made in Parliament regarding the restoration of J&K’s statehood.

“The Honourable Prime Minister and the Home Minister gave a clear promise on the floor of the House that statehood would be restored after the electoral process. A considerable time has passed, yet the issue did not even find mention in the Lieutenant Governor’s address. This is a complete betrayal of public trust,” Kar said.

He also cited the resolution passed by the erstwhile state’s own cabinet. “They themselves passed the statehood resolution. What more do they need now? The contradiction in their position is evident for all to see,” he added.

Asserting that the people of J&K are “equal citizens” entitled to the same rights, Kar stated that the struggle would continue. “Our fight for our permanent rights goes on, both inside and outside the legislative house. There will be no surrender,” he declared.

The legislator linked the current situation in Kashmir to “historical compromises” by past leadership. “We are facing these consequences today because of those who surrendered earlier and inflicted deep damage on Kashmir’s interests,” he claimed.

Stating that public patience had run out, Kar further added “It is high time now. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have waited long enough for the Centre to honour its pledge.”
