Bandipora, Jan 25: The Congress party on Sunday launched its nationwide campaigns — ‘MGNREGA Bacho Sangram’ and ‘Humare Riyasat Humara Haq’ — in the Sonawari Assembly constituency of Bandipora district, intensifying its political outreach on issues of employment and constitutional rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
The programme was organised at Prang Hajin, at the residence of senior Congress leader G M Rafiquee, and witnessed the participation of senior party functionaries, district leadership and workers from across the constituency.
The gathering was presided over by MLA Bandipora, Nazimudin Bhat, along with District Congress Committee (DCC) President Bandipora, Advocate Sheikh Farooq Habeeb. Youth Congress General Secretary Mubshier Rather, District Youth Congress President Bandipora Advocate Arshad, and other party leaders were also present.
Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders said the ‘MGNREGA Bacho Sangram’ campaign aims to protect and restore the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, which they described as a lifeline for rural households. They demanded the complete revival of the scheme, including restoration of its original name, and called for timely wage payments and guaranteed employment days.
The speakers stressed that the right to work is a constitutional entitlement and urged the government to implement the All India Minimum Wages Act in Jammu and Kashmir to safeguard labour rights and ensure dignified livelihoods for rural workers.
Under the ‘Humare Riyasat Humara Haq’ campaign, the party leadership reiterated its demand for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. They termed the continuation of Union Territory status as a denial of democratic and constitutional rights, asserting that elected representatives must have full authority to govern and address public grievances effectively.
The leaders said the twin campaigns reflect the Congress party’s continued mobilisation on issues affecting employment, governance and federal rights in Jammu and Kashmir, and vowed to take these demands to every village and constituency across the region in the coming days.
