Baramulla, Jan 01: While the world celebrated the dawn of a new year, Assistant Commandants Ruchi and Rohit a husband-and-wife duo in the Border Security Force (BSF) remained at their posts along the Line of Control in North Kashmir, ensuring the nation’s security.
Far from family and loved ones, the couple is performing their duties amid the biting cold and harsh winter of Kashmir’s northern sector, embodying vigilance and commitment on the frontier.
Posted to the same BSF unit along the LoC, they share a clear objective, to secure the borders, counter infiltration and terror threats, and help ensure peace in the Kashmir Valley.
In an exclusive conversation with Kashmir Convener, the couple said, “We have trained together, fought together, and stood together at the toughest posts. Serving here as partners is both a privilege and a profound responsibility.”
Speaking about Operation Sindoor, they said, “We did not think as a couple, we thought as soldiers. Our priority is always the safety of our country.”
The officer couple said, “We conduct high-risk patrols to coordinate counter-infiltration operations. Our duty to the nation comes before personal comfort.”
“We are here for the protection of our people. For us, our country, India, comes above everything,” they added.
What defines their story is not rank alone, but a shared baptism by fire. Both officers fought side by side in the Operation Sindoor, enduring its severe trials together, a senior officer in the unit told Kashmir Convener.
“Bound by marriage, uniform, and mission, Assistant Commandants Ruchi and Rohit now keep watch at forward posts along the Line of Control,” he stated. “This New Year, their example of duty and sacrifice on the nation’s frontier gives our celebration its deepest meaning.”
Meanwhile, jam-packed with a rush of tourists, Gulmarg returned to life on the New Year occasion.
The celebration was witnessed with a huge rush in the winter wonderland. Officials from the Tourism Department viewed this as a great sign for the revival of the tourism industry in Kashmir, following the terrible summer season of 2025 after the deadliest Pahalgam terror attack.
