Pulwama, Nov 11: A family in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district is struggling with shock and disbelief after their relative was identified as a suspect in a major security investigation. The probe follows a powerful explosion in Delhi that killed 12 people and injured more than 25.
The sister-in-law of the suspect, Dr. Umar Un Nabi, told the Kashmir Convener that following the blast, security forces took her husband, brother-in-law, and elderly mother-in-law into custody for questioning.
“They asked us about Umar’s whereabouts,” she stated. “We told them he was in Delhi. Then they took the three away.”
The family portrays Dr. Umar as a man starkly at odds with the allegations. His sister-in-law, Muzamila, described him as a dedicated and affectionate family man, not a militant.
“We last spoke to him last Friday,” she recalled, her voice tinged with sorrow. “He was incredibly attached to my children. Whenever he visited home, he was always busy playing cricket; he was passionate about the game.”
She vehemently denied any connection between Dr. Umar and other individuals accused in recent cases, including another doctor arrested in a separate explosives seizure. “I don’t know who Adil is. Umar wasn’t that kind of man,” she asserted.
Muzamila emphasized the family’s sacrifices to support his education. “We faced immense challenges to educate him and worked tirelessly so he could stand on his own feet,” she shared. “I cannot believe any of this is happening.”
She added that Dr. Umar was engaged but unmarried, had not visited home in two months, and was a focused student with few friends.
Meanwhile, Azad Shakil, the brother of another arrested individual, Dr. Muzammil, in the related Faridabad terror module case, also defended his family’s integrity.
“He last visited us in June during our father’s surgery,” Shakil said. “Everyone is alleging that he is a terrorist, but we have nothing to do with it. There hasn’t been a single case against our family in 50 years. We are Indians by heart—we’ve even faced stone pelting for India.”
Shakil expressed frustration that they are not being allowed to meet his brother and revealed that his sister’s marriage, which the accused was to attend, has been cancelled.
Pertinently, The initial investigation revealed that the driver of the Hyundai i20 involved in the explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station was Dr Mohammed Umar, a resident of Koil village in Pulwama sources said.
The CCTV footage from the area confirmed that Umar was driving the car. The blast occurred on Monday evening when a Haryana-registered car, a Hyundai i20, parked near Gate No.1 of the Red Fort Metro Station exploded.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday vowed that those behind the deadly car blast in Delhi would be brought to justice, assuring that the government is taking the attack “very seriously.”
